Demonstrates Self-Control?

I found a phrase in my Bible study today that reminded me of my report cards from elementary school.  Back in the lower grades there were two marks we could get.  Our teacher would give us an “S” that stood for “satisfactory” or a “U” for “unsatisfactory.”  No matter what my other grades were, I always knew that I would get an “S” for the section on “Demonstrates self-control.”  Since I was a very obedient child, my teachers thought I had self-control.  Either I had them fooled or I have lost some of that self-control over the years.

As I was reading in Titus today, I saw that Paul admonished Titus that the older women were to teach the younger women, among other things, to be self-controlled.  That phrase jumped out at me and the Holy Spirit convicted me that I haven’t been demonstrating much self-control lately.

For instance,

  • My breakfast this morning consisted of cookie dough.
  • I slept in until 8:00 this morning even though my son was up at 7:00.
  • I read a book for pleasure for 4 ½ hours last night and left the kitchen a mess.
  • I haven’t exercised in about 5 months.

While none of those alone are a big deal, it is the pattern they represent that worries me.  They are indicative of a pattern of doing what I want when I want to do it.  This is not a godly way to live.  I am to be self-controlled.  I need to learn to make decisions that would demonstrate to God that I want to follow His plan.  And I am quite sure that His plan for my nutrition is not for me to eat cookie dough for breakfast, (although how great would that be if it was His plan!).

How does my self-control (or lack thereof) relate to you and your wedding preparation?  Tune in tomorrow to find out.
